There's nothing I cherish more than exploring a thrift or charity shop, so when I discovered the Upcycle charity hub in Chepstow, I knew I'd found something extraordinary. Nestled at the bottom of town in the Station Yard Industrial Estate, this sustainable haven has something for everyone who believes in kindness, community, and making a difference.
Upcycle is one of four remarkable units owned by Matt, a former teacher with kind eyes and a generous smile whose vision for sustainability has captured the hearts of locals and those further afield. The moment you approach, the store's welcoming entrance beckons you inside, promising an adventure in conscious shopping.
Walking through this two-floor treasure trove, I'm surrounded by quality secondhand furniture, vintage clothing, refurbished electronics, and countless pre-loved items waiting for new homes. The friendly staff bustle about as I make my way through sofas, tables, and bureaus toward the Repair cafe that everyone's been talking about.
A helpful staff member guides me across the courtyard, where I pause to admire an eclectic collection of outdoor seating—a kaleidoscope of colorful tables, chairs, and umbrellas, with cozy sheltered nooks perfect for cooler days, before making my way inside.

With book-lined walls, and a mix of comfy sofas and traditional tables, the space is truly unique. On allocated days you can even bring items that are repaired for free whilst you sit, eat and sip on a hot or cold drink. There is also a family-friendly area upstairs brimming with children's toys and games.
As I settle at a small table, my appetite leads me to the menu featuring homemade sandwiches, jacket potatoes, wraps, and the soup of the day, lovingly prepared by their Ukrainian chef in her bright apron. At the counter, a young man with additional needs serves me with such warmth that I'm reminded how this place embraces inclusive employment, creating meaningful opportunities for all.
After savoring my delicious traditional Ukrainian soup, I explore the impressive bookshelves, each section thoughtfully labeled. Every book sale supports educational initiatives in Teso, Uganda, helping build classrooms and transform communities. A donation box sits quietly nearby, allowing everyone to contribute what they can—a beautiful testament to the understanding that permeates this space.
The cafe buzzes with life as musicians gather around a larger table, their ukuleles providing a gentle soundtrack. Phones remain tucked away as people connect face-to-face, sharing stories over games and conversation. It's refreshing to witness such genuine community interaction.
Matt generously offers a tour, which I gladly accept. Our first stop is a portacabin. Inside, a dedicated volunteer is sorting books that can't be sold. These are collected weekly by Goldstones in Carmarthenshire, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Next, I'm taken to an impressive array of bikes, from children's cycles to mountain bikes. While some must be sold for scrap, I'm told that many are lovingly refurbished by the team and sold at incredibly reasonable prices, both in-store and on eBay. They even offer free workshops teaching people to repair their own bikes.
As we return to the store's entrance, the continuous flow of donations never ceases – a sobering reminder of our throwaway society, yet also a testament to the vital work happening here. Matt and his team transform these cast-offs into opportunities, with proceeds supporting Ugandan communities in a variety of ways, such as providing sewing machines to empower women entrepreneurs and even supplying goats to vulnerable families.
The impact of Upcycle extends far beyond Chepstow's borders. Every purchase, every donation, every volunteer hour creates ripples of positive change. I can't praise their work enough, and I urge you to experience it yourself. Visit the Forest Upcycling Project website to learn more, or better yet, come explore their stores in person.
As I bid farewell to Matt and his wonderful team, I'm already planning my return visit—and I hope to see you there. Together, we can be part of something truly special: a movement that transforms lives through the simple act of choosing secondhand, supporting charity, and believing in community.
Don't wait—your next treasure hunt awaits at Upcycle Chepstow or one of their other upcycle units, where every find has a story and every purchase makes a difference.
